MUSC 503 - The History of the Pianoforte and Its Literature

Comprehensive study of the piano and its predecessors. Traces the history of keyboard instruments, emphasizing the ways in which the development of the instruments interacted with the development of keyboard literature and performance practices. Includes familiarization with the principal keyboard composers, performers and instrument makers from earliest times to the present. Examine the history of piano technique, piano pedagogy and how it relates to the development of the piano and its literature.

Prerequisites MUSC 114, MUSC 201 or permission of instructor.
