FYS HST10 - Immigrant America: Past and Present

4 Hour(s) Credit
Undertake an introductory exploration of American immigration in the past and present. Americans have debated immigration and the status of foreigners from 1800 to today where the issue features in presidential campaigns. Explore the diverse immigrant experience and debates over citizenship, exclusion, borders, national and ethnic identity, assimilation, diversity, race, and class. Newcomers did not simply “blend in” or “melt away” in the great American soup; they changed and added to American culture and still do. If you go far enough, your ancestors came from somewhere else. Many came from Europe or Asia; others came from Africa against their will. The United States is deeply integrated into an ongoing story of global human migration driven by economic choices, conflict, persecution and climate change.
