English, B.A. English as a Second Language Concentration/ English, M.A. TESOL Track (Maryland Certification) Accelerated Master’s Curriculum Guide  (Suggested 5-Year Plan of Study)

The Accelerated Master’s Program in TESOL with K-12 Certification allows students to complete both the B.A. in English with a concentration in English as a Second Language (ESL) and the M.A. in TESOL with Maryland State certification for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in K-12 public schools  all within five years.

  • Students complete 60 undergraduate credits toward the major, including:

    • 16 credits in ESL core requirements

    • 4 credits in writing

    • 4 credits in literature

    • 16 credits in ESL electives

    • 20 credits in general electives (including required foreign language coursework and 3 graduate courses)

  • Students complete 33 graduate credits for the M.A. in TESOL and Maryland certification.

    • 9 graduate credits are taken in the senior year and also count as 12 upper-division undergraduate credits

    • The remaining 24 graduate credits - including required education courses and internship placements - are completed in the fifth year

This program differs from the non-certification track by including coursework and field experiences required for Maryland State K-12 teacher certification. Students must meet all certification prerequisites, including completion of foreign language requirements and passing scores on the Praxis Core, before entering the final certification year.

English, M.A. TESOL Tracks Admission Requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in English requires an application for graduate program admission at SU; the application fee; official transcript from all colleges and universities attended; and, if applying for in-state tuition, a Residency/Domicile Information Form. Applicants must have completed or anticipate completing prior to admission an undergraduate English major or its equivalent (30 semester hours of English beyond freshman English) or a major in a related area, with a 3.0 GPA in those undergraduate courses. A student who fails to meet this requirement should consult the English Department’s graduate director regarding removal of deficiencies.

In addition to the materials required by SU’s Office of Admission, the applicant for the M.A. in English must also submit (or have forwarded) directly to the English Department Graduate Program Director, Salisbury University, 1101 Camden Avenue, Salisbury, MD 21801, the following materials:

  • A written statement of purpose for applying to the English M.A. program and specific option.
  • Two letters of recommendation using the department’s form (available through the English Department’s website).
  • GRE General Test scores are optional but not required.

All application materials should be received by the English Department’s graduate program director 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester for which the student is applying. Application materials for applicants who wish to be considered for teaching assistantships (which start only in the fall semester) must be received by January 15 for first consideration and by March 1 for final consideration. Applications for those not applying for a teaching assistantship must be submitted by August 1 for the fall semester and January 1 for spring. When admitted to the English graduate program, graduate students may count no more than nine hours taken as non-degree students toward the M.A. in English. With the approval of the graduate director, up to nine hours of graduate credit may be transferred from another institution.

University Undergraduate Major Policies


  • Refer to the program page for this major and the Courses  section of this catalog for approved prerequisites and General Education courses.
  • Program requirements may not equal 120 credit hours. Students must register for additional electives to complete 120 credits required for graduation.
  • All graduates must have a minimum of 30 credits of 300/400-level courses with C grade or above; at least 15 of those credits must be taken at SU.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for graduation.
  • Students must complete at least 30 credit hours by direct classroom instruction and/or laboratory experience.
  • Students must take 30 of the last 37 credit hours at SU.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to satisfy graduation requirements. Please refer to the program page of this catalog for detailed major requirements.
  • Students must apply online for graduation by November 15 for May and by May 15 for December.

Accelerated Master’s Requirements


PLEASE NOTE: After fulfilling the undergraduate program requirements, you must submit a graduate application for the corresponding graduate program. This step is necessary for your audit to accurately display the outstanding graduate-level requirements for the Accelerated Master’s Program.

  • Nine units of graduate work (with a grade of B or better) can be counted toward both the undergraduate degree and the master’s degree. 
  • Undergraduate students may declare the accelerated master’s option after completing between 60 and 89 credits.
  • Transfer students must have completed at least 12 of their major credits at SU. 
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative SU undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be considered for admission into an accelerated master’s program. 
  • Students must maintain the required undergraduate GPA as well as a 3.00 GPA or better in master’s coursework.
  • Students must submit their graduate application when applying for undergraduate graduation.  
  • Students must successfully complete a total of 120 credits (undergraduate and graduate combined) in order to earn their bachelor’s degree.
  • The graduate grading basis will apply to all graduate-level courses whether taken when the student is an undergraduate or graduate student.
  • Grades earned in the approved graduate-level courses will impact the GPA in both the undergraduate and graduate careers.
