Mathematics, B.S. Traditional Concentration/Education, M.A.T. Accelerated Master’s

Advisement for the major is available from the Mathematical Sciences  Department

Mathematics, B.S. Traditional Concentration/Education, M.A.T. Accelerated Master’s Curriculum Guide  (Suggested 5-Year Plan of Study)

This accelerated master’s program allows students to complete the traditional mathematics undergraduate degree in four years and then obtain a master’s degree by completing one additional year of study. Graduate coursework begins during senior year of the undergraduate program. The master’s degree leads to a license to teach secondary mathematics.

  • All required mathematics and computer science courses, including prerequisite courses, must be completed with grades of C or better.

  • Some concentrations may accept the nontraditional courses MATH 380 /COSC 380 , MATH 390 /COSC 390 , MATH 495 /COSC 495 , but in no case may more than one or the repetition of one count toward the requirements for the major in mathematics.

  • Transfer students are required to complete at least 12 credits of approved upper-division MATH/COSC courses at SU.

  • Math courses taken before declaring the mathematics major should be evaluated by an advisor before proceeding with course selection.

Prerequisites

Three units of high school mathematics (including Algebra II and geometry) or college algebra is a prerequisite for all other math courses. Students may not receive credit for math courses which are prerequisites for or equivalent to math courses for which they have already received native or transfer credit. No course may be taken until all prerequisite courses have been completed with grades of C or better.

Departmental Honors

To qualify for departmental honors, a student must meet all of the following criteria:

Academics

  • The student must qualify for institutional honors (cum laude or better).

  • The student must complete at least 18 hours of upper-division courses in mathematics and/or computer science at Salisbury University.

  • The student must earn a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 in all upper-level courses in mathematics and/or computer science taken at Salisbury University.

Research

  • The student must assemble an Honors Advisory Committee consisting of an advisor and two additional faculty members. This committee must be approved by the department chair. The advisor must be on the faculty of the Department of Mathematics abd Computer Science.

  • The student must write an honors thesis. This thesis must consist of original research in a subject area approved by the thesis committee.

  • The student must give a presentation of his/her research to the Department of Mathematics abd Computer Science.

  • The student must be approved for departmental honors by an absolute majority of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science faculty. (An “absolute majority” requires that the number of “yes” votes minus the number of “no” votes is not less than half of the total number of faculty voting, counting abstentions.) The faculty will make this decision based on both the student’s written thesis and the student’s research presentation.

Admission to Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Program

Admission to the M.A.T. at SU requires the following additional application documents and requirements specified by the department:

  • Submit to Salisbury University official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended indicating a baccalaureate degree in an appropriate content area*.

  • Possess an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 in the last half of the undergraduate program, or possess a prior graduate degree.

  • Complete Salisbury University application for graduate program admission.

  • Complete a Residency/Domicile Information Form (if applying for in-state tuition).

  • Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the following criteria:

    • ability to write at an appropriate skill level for graduate level work; and

    • level of motivation appropriate to carry the candidate through a rigorous graduate program.

  • Undergo a structured interview by appropriate M.A.T. Admissions Committee.

Content Area Deficiencies: Typically candidates are admitted to the M.A.T. program with no more than one content course deficiency. (See content major checklists on the SU website.) Candidates, once admitted, are expected to meet with their education advisor to develop an approved plan of study for completion of necessary content area coursework deficiencies as well as program coursework. It is essential that each candidate and advisor meet to clarify the specific requirements for program completion. Praxis II Content may be required for admission into the program, see program director for more information. All program and content courses must be completed with grades of C or better before the degree is conferred.

Checklist

This checklist is an unofficial tool for planning. Matriculated students and advisors should consult the Academic Requirements Report in GullNet before and after registering for classes each semester to track academic progress.

University Undergraduate Major Policies

  • Refer to the program page for this major and the Courses  section of this catalog for approved prerequisites and General Education courses.
  • Program requirements may not equal 120 credit hours. Students must register for additional electives to complete 120 credits required for graduation.
  • All graduates must have a minimum of 30 credits of 300/400-level courses with C grade or above; at least 15 of those credits must be taken at SU.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for graduation.
  • Students must complete at least 30 credit hours by direct classroom instruction and/or laboratory experience.
  • Students must take 30 of the last 37 credit hours at SU.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to satisfy graduation requirements. Please refer to the program page of this catalog for detailed major requirements.
  • Students must apply online for graduation by November 15 for May and by May 15 for December.

Accelerated Master’s Requirements

PLEASE NOTE: After fulfilling the undergraduate program requirements, you must submit a graduate application for the corresponding graduate program. This step is necessary for your audit to accurately display the outstanding graduate-level requirements for the Accelerated Master’s Program.

  • Nine units of graduate work (with a grade of B or better) can be counted toward both the undergraduate degree and the master’s degree.
  • Undergraduate students may declare the accelerated master’s option after completing between 60 and 89 credits.
  • Transfer students must have completed at least 12 of their major credits at SU.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative SU undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be considered for admission into an accelerated master’s program.
  • Students must maintain the required undergraduate GPA as well as a 3.00 GPA or better in master’s coursework.
  • Students must submit their graduate application when applying for undergraduate graduation.
  • Students must successfully complete a total of 120 credits (undergraduate and graduate combined) in order to earn their bachelor’s degree.
  • The graduate grading basis will apply to all graduate-level courses whether taken when the student is an undergraduate or graduate student.
