History, B.A./History, M.A. Accelerated Master’s Program

Advisement for the major is available from the History  Department

History, B.A./History, M.A. Accelerated Master’s Program Curriculum Guide  (Suggested 5-Year Plan of Study)

This accelerated master’s program allows undergraduate SU students to complete the traditional History undergraduate degree in four years and then obtain a master’s degree in History by completing one additional year of study at SU.

  • Complete all required traditional History undergraduate degree courses and SU graduation requirements, with a minimum average Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better

  • The M.A. in History requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework for graduation. A maximum of 9 credit hours in History can be “double counted” from an SU student’s undegraduate career for this accelerated master’s program. That means 9 of the 30 credit hours required for an M.A. in History can be completed during the student’s undergraduate career, leaving 21 credit hours to be completed during the M.A. portion of this program. The accelerated master’s program results in a minimum of 141 credit hours for students to graduate with a B.A. and M.A. in History.
  • Graduate students are limited to a maximum of 18 credit hours per academic year. When students in this program have completed 9 credit credits of graduate coursework during their undergraduate career and then have 21 credits remaining, students in this accelerated master’s program must take one 3 credit course the summer after their B.A. graduation (before they begin full-time as a graduate student) or in the Winter term during their M.A. career. This enables students to graduate with an M.A. in History one year after they have graduated with a B.A. in History.
  • History courses taken before declaring the History major should be evaluated by an advisor before proceeding with course selection.
