Respiratory Therapy, B.S. Pre-Physician Assistant Track Curriculum Guide  (Suggested 4-Year Plan of Study)

 

Salisbury University’s School of Health Sciences offers a professional program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy, which prepares students for a career as a respiratory therapist. Respiratory Therapy is a specialized health care profession trained in pulmonary medicine in order to work therapeutically with people suffering from cardiopulmonary conditions such as asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, cardiovascular disorders, and trauma ranging from infancy to the geriatric population. To practice as a respiratory therapist, a candidate must complete an entry-level respiratory therapy program from a nationally accredited academic institution that sponsors a respiratory therapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Students must also pass a national credentialing examination and, in most states, apply for a license to practice as a respiratory therapist.

Admission to the Program

Admission to the Salisbury University respiratory therapy program is competitive. Admission standards include the following:

A. Enrollment in the respiratory therapy major is a two-step process: first admission to the University and second, submission of the application for admission for entry into the respiratory therapy program by February 10. Admission to the University does not guarantee acceptance to begin upper-division respiratory therapy courses.

B.  Successfully complete the following prerequisite courses with grades of C or better:

C. A GPA of 2.5 is required for admission but does not guarantee admission. Priority for admission into the professional program is given to students with the highest cumulative grade point average from all institutions.

Program Policies

  • The program follows a cohort model that requires all students to be enrolled full time for two academic years.
  • The courses in the respiratory therapy curriculum are sequenced, with each semester’s courses a prerequisite for the succeeding semester. If a student earns a grade less than a ‘C’ in any respiratory therapy program didactic or clinical course, the student’s progress in the program is halted. You must submit a resubmission form. Progression in the subsequent year is not guaranteed and is based on seat availability in the program.
  • A student may repeat a respiratory therapy course ONE time. Therefore, if a student earns a grade of less than a “C” in any more than one course with a RESP prefix they will be dismissed from the respiratory program.

This checklist is an unofficial tool for planning. Matriculated students and advisors should consult the Academic Requirements Report in GullNet before and after registering for classes each semester to track academic progress.

University Undergraduate Major Policies


  • Refer to the program page for this major and the Courses  section of this catalog for approved prerequisites and General Education courses.
  • Requirements may not equal 120 credit hours. Students must register for additional electives to complete 120 credits required for graduation.
  • All graduates must have a minimum of 30 credits of 300/400-level courses with C grade or above; at least 15 of those credits must be taken at SU.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for graduation.
  • Students must complete at least 30 credit hours by direct classroom instruction and/or laboratory experience.
  • Students must take 30 of the last 37 credit hours at SU.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to satisfy graduation requirements. Please refer to the program page of this catalog for detailed major requirements.
  • Students must apply online for graduation by November 15 for May and by May 15 for December.
