The Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Literacy Studies program provides students with a strong core in literacy, theory, research and practice with the aim of cultivating scholarly and reflective practitioners who are prepared to foster culturally-responsive, effective literacy learning across diverse contexts. Our Ed.D. program emphasizes a sociocultural perspective for understanding and developing literacy education. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of educational professionals, who will advance knowledge of the field to address problems of literacy practice in diverse educational settings, spanning early education to post-secondary contexts. The program is a terminal doctoral program that does not lead to further certification of licensure.

This applied Ed.D. program facilitates inquiry-based learning through research and case studies that integrate authentic experiences into student research.

The cohort format encourages personal, professional, social, cultural and technological expertise through an intensive community of learning. The delivery of the program includes three years of online, synchronous coursework and a year devoted to research and writing of the dissertation. Fifty-seven credits (course work and dissertation) are required, with more if a student chooses to select optional electives.

Admission to Program

The following items must be submitted as part of the application process. Preference is given to applicants who have three years professional experience.

  • Submit official academic transcripts from all colleges and universities attended indicating a master’s degree from a national-accredited university in a focus area in education or closely related field.

  • Possess a graduate-level grade point average of at least a 3.5.

  • Complete Salisbury University application for doctoral program admission.

  • Submit three professional recommendations from individuals who can speak to the applicant’s likely success in doctoral study.

  • Submit a professional writing sample prior to program admission.

  • Submit a statement of interest.

Program Requirements


  • Complete 57 credits with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. A course grade below C will lead to program dismissal.
  • Receive a passing score in the Preliminary Exam. Those receiving an unsatisfactory score may continue on probation and must pass the preliminary examination by the end of the following semester.
  • Receive a passing score in the Advancement to Candidacy/Comprehensive Examination.
  • Successfully defend a Dissertation Proposal.
  • Successfully defend a Dissertation Defense.
  • Submit final dissertation to ProQuest Dissertation Publishing
