FYS SWK02 - Chapters and Challenges: Banned Books and Social Issues

2 Hour(s) Credit
Who gets to decide what we read and what we read about? While censorship has always been an issue in our society, book challenges and bans are currently on the rise. These bans are often focused on books and material that address social issues including LGBTQ+ identities, racism and racial justice, and human sexuality. Learn about the impact of censorship, read a variety of challenged/banned books, and explore the social issues at the heart of these challenges through a critical social lens. Co-designed by education and social work faculty, this interdisciplinary course expands your knowledge of the stories we tell about the challenges we face in society.
Three hours per week with enhancement (for both FYS-EDU05 and FYS-SWK02)
Corequisites FYS EDU05
May Not Receive Credit for Both if a second FYS is taken. Taking a second FYS will replace the original FYS grade, regardless of topic.
