SOWK 351 - Deaf Culture and Deaf History

Gain insights and perspectives on the cultural aspects and history of the deaf community in the United States. Topics covered include demographics on deafness; the social, cultural and medical models on deafness; history of the deaf community and deaf education; forms of communication used by people who are deaf and hard of hearing; linguistic and cultural oppression; family life; types of education; economic, legal and social implications of being deaf; diversity in the deaf community; deaf people in media, literature and the arts; and technology’s effect on people who are deaf and deaf culture.
