PHYS 109 - Principles of Astronomy 3 Hour(s) Credit Survey of the development of astronomy from ancient to modern times. Principles discussed, in a largely conceptual manner, include the scale of the universe, the night sky, cycles of the sun and moon, Kepler’s and Newton’s Laws, light and spectra, telescopes and observatories, the sun and the solar system, the structure and evolution of stars, exoplanets and life on other worlds, the Milky Way and other galaxies, and cosmology. Three hours lecture per week Meets General Education: Solutions Through Science (STS) Met General Education Prior to Fall 2024: IVB May Not Receive Credit for Both PHYS 109 and PHYS 108
