English to Speakers of Other Languages/ K-12 Certification, B.A. Curriculum Guide  (Suggested 4-Year Plan of Study)

The program provides a course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts with a major in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) and a State of Maryland K-12 ESOL Certification. The program is designed to prepare educators in instructional and leadership capacities for K-12 school settings.

The program at Salisbury University is housed in the Department of English in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts. However, it is an interdisciplinary major designed for prospective students who wish to enter the teaching profession. Candidates for this degree will do coursework in the theory and practice of ESOL, reading, applied linguistics, the English language and multicultural education. The K-12 ESOL Certification Program is aligned with national standards for the preparation of ESOL professionals, as established by the National TESOL Organization and NCATE. It also reflects principles of Maryland’s Redesign for Teacher Education.

The ESOL program includes a General Education experience, the ESOL core requirements and a professional semester consisting of two internships and an internship seminar.

Core Requirements for all English Majors

  • Complete 10 courses of English beyond ENGL 103.

  • Complete all courses in the major with grades of C or better.

  • Complete 1 writing course beyond ENGL 103 (taken as part of track/concentration).

  • Complete 1 diversity course (taken as part of track/concentration).

  • Complete the requirements of a track or concentration.

  • Transfer students majoring in English must complete a minimum of 4 courses of English courses at Salisbury University

University Undergraduate Major Policies


  • Refer to the program page for this major and the Courses  section of this catalog for approved prerequisites and General Education courses.
  • Requirements may not equal 120 credit hours. Students must register for additional electives to complete 120 credits required for graduation.
  • All graduates must have a minimum of 30 credits of 300/400-level courses with C grade or above; at least 15 of those credits must be taken at SU.
  • Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for graduation.
  • Students must complete at least 30 credit hours by direct classroom instruction and/or laboratory experience.
  • Students must take 30 of the last 37 credit hours at SU.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to satisfy graduation requirements. Please refer to the program page of this catalog for detailed major requirements.
  • Students must apply online for graduation by November 15 for May and by May 15 for December.

Education Requirements


Maryland K-12 ESOL Certification requires candidates to complete a minimum of 6 semester hours of course work in a single modern foreign language at the college or university level or the completion of a college level examination program or comparable test. Accordingly, candidates who have studied a language other than their native language, including those who have studied English as a second language, have a range of options for demonstrating level of competency. They should see the Chair of the English Department to discuss these options.

Pre-Professional Requirements (3 Courses)


Professional Program (12-13 Hours)


A student is eligible for the Methods Semester after:

  • Completing an application for formal admission to the Professional Program.
  • Obtaining written approval of the application from content area and education advisor.
  • Completing all pre-professional requirements.
  • Completing 56 college credits with a minimum 2.50 GPA including transfer courses
  • Having a minimum 2.75 GPA in the academic major, including transfer credit
  • Showing satisfactory results on Praxis Core, SAT or ACT examinations as defined by the Maryland State Department of Education (see education advisor regarding passing scores) OR have a minimum cumulative SU GPA of 3.0.*
    ​​​​​​​*Note: Students who enter the professional teaching program with a 3.0 GPA in lieu of basic skills test scores must also graduate with a 3.0 cumulative GPA in order to obtain their teacher certification in the State of Maryland. See education advisor for approval to take this option.
  • Completing 4 courses in the major field.

* Course must be completed with grades of C or better.

Methods - Fall Semester, Senior Year (3 Hours)

Professional Semester: Internships (15 Hours)


A student is eligible for Internships after:

  • Completing a minimum of 90 credits including methods and at least 8 courses in the academic major.

  • Completing a written application for internship.

  • Having a minimum 2.75 GPA in all professional education courses (with no grade below C) including transfer courses.

  • Having 90 college credit credits with a minimum overall 2.50 GPA, including transfer credit.

  • Having a minimum 2.75 GPA in the academic major, including transfer credit.

  • Furnishing 2 recommendations from faculty in the Secondary and Physical Education  Department and 1 from the major advisor.

Electives (to Equal 120 Total Credits)

Certification Examination


Official scores on all certification examinations required by the State of Maryland must be sent from the testing company to Salisbury University as a requirement for graduation. Scores on the edTPA must be among those sent to the University before graduation. Documentation of submission of the edTPA can be accepted in lieu of official scores on it.
